DIY Project #2- Hand Sanitizer

Today, I made the essential oil hand sanitizer that I mentioned in this post.

I had leftover Aloe Vera gel from the summer so I got that out. I bought a small bottle of Vitamin E oil that had the least amount of ingredients (the most pure) at Sprouts. Then, I cleaned out an old hand sanitizer squeeze bottle I had on hand.

Next, I added 8 drops of DoTerra On Guard essential oil.

I stirred them together, added a little water and it made a creamy lotion/gel consistency.

Next, came the tough part- getting it in that teeny squeeze bottle. I looked through all my kitchen drawers and finally found a cake decorating tip! I used it as a tiny funnel and spooned the gel into it. It took a while to slowly fill up the bottle.

Finally, done! I’m going to buy some bigger squeeze bottles to put the rest of the gel in. I am putting this one in my son’s school backpack!

This is very exciting to me (I know, I’m a nerd) because it is all natural and much better for the skin than other hand sanitizer I usually buy! I feel great using this on my kids knowing how good the quality of ingredients are and how effective the On Guard oil is in protecting them from germs. DIY project #2 done!

DIY Project #1- Foaming Hand Soap

Today I finally got around to making my first batch of DIY foaming hand soap using DoTerra essential oils. I posted the recipe in this past blog post.

I found the unscented Castille Soap at Sprouts. I used a foaming dispenser that had just run out of soap and washed the remnants of the old soap out first.

I decided that for the first time I tried to make the soap that I would use the same oils they listed, though in the future I’d like to use On Guard.

Then, I filled the dispenser with water to the top and replaced the pump. I shook it and then it was ready to be used!

So quick and easy to make! It will be much better for the skin and not so harsh like the soap I usually buy. Next on the agenda: essential oils hand sanitizer!

Diffuser Love

It’s here! It’s here! My new Aroma Ready Whisper essential oils diffuser came today! It’s like Christmas came early!

20131011-140746.jpg
I’ve been waiting and waiting to finally get a diffuser to emit essential oils in our home and I finally got an opportunity to buy a great one for a discount! Some local people placed a bulk order and we all got a discount on them. I just set it up and got it working! Isn’t it pretty?

You can turn the blue light off too.

20131011-140939.jpg

The setup was very fast and surprisingly simple. Literally a couple of minutes and I had it plugged in and working. So far so good. It has various settings for different lengths of time you want it to run. It’s also silent, which means you don’t even notice it’s running!

The germs are starting to spread at school and some of our neighbors are sick. Needless to say, I am extremely glad to be able to diffuse DoTerra On Guard protective essential oil through my house to ward off germs entering our home. This will be great to have through the winter cold season too. I’ll be able to diffuse other oils to help with breathing issues if they arise. I think I’m in love! 😍

A Better Hand Sanitizer

I have been searching a long time for a better hand sanitizer. I don’t like using the harsh gels that contain a lot of alcohol and are drying. My oldest son has sensitive skin and always has irritated skin on the tips of his hands. I send a small squeeze bottle of hand sanitizer with him to school and keep hand cleaning wipes in my car and purse all the time. (I confess I’m a bit of a germaphobe. I’m working on it.) I always worry the more “natural” alcohol-free hand cleaners won’t disinfect as well, so I’ve continued using the not-so-natural kind.

Today, I received my seasonal DoTerra Living fall magazine issue in the mail and am so excited to see a recipe for homemade hand cleaner! It’s all-natural, safe, alcohol-free and should be non-irritating. So far, we’ve had good experiences using the On Guard essential oil daily and no one has gotten sick. I can’t wait to try this hand cleaner that I’ll actually feel good about giving to my family!

No OTC’s Necessary

I saw this posted on my friend’s Facebook page today. I think this is so helpful! I had to share.

Use those essential oils in place of some over-the-counter drugs! No harmful side effects and I can tell you first hand that it works!

3 examples:

– I recently had a pounding headache. The protocol DoTerra recommends for headaches is a drop of peppermint and a drop of lavender together. I rubbed each on my forehead and behind my ears. Voila! The headache went away. No need for headache medicine!

– Yesterday morning I had heartburn. I took a drop of peppermint oil and added it to a cup of water and drank it. It 100% soothed my stomach and made the heartburn disappear! No Tums needed!

-My sister’s 3 year old daughter woke in the middle of the night screaming and crying with growing pains in her legs. She rubbed Deep Blue oil on her legs and within 5 minutes she was calm, feeling better and going back to sleep.

Essential oils work. Plain and simple. Safe and effective. Getcha some. (:

Oils On the Go

We are road tripping today as a family so I’m excited to get to use my travel bottles for the first time! My sweet friend Wellness Empress sent me a travel pack for my oils when I signed up as a distributor for DoTerra. I finally decided to use it today as I was thinking about possibly needing oils on our day trip. I didn’t want to bring my big bottles and this is a great (not to mention cute) way to carry them with you!

Look how tiny and cute these little travel bottles are! The labels fit on the tops too!

I love the thought of having my oils with me in my purse whenever I may need them!

The Daily Rubdown

So, I’m really embracing the essential oils thing. I have been using a variety of them daily lately on my family. They have been very gracious and willing to let me slather them with oils. I call this our “daily rubdown”. (: (Disclaimer: I use DoTerra brand oils as they are the highest, therapeutic grade oils and one of the best brands on the market. Not all essential oils are created equal.)

Here’s what I’ve been doing: for my entire family (2 children, my hubby and me), On Guard in the morning before they leave for school/work and some days at night if we’ve really been around sick people, germy places or I think they’re fighting off illness.

My eldest son has had bad allergies lately, so I’m using 1 drop each of lavender, peppermint and lemon oils on his feet, sometimes multiple times a day if necessary. Apparently it’s a magic blend that fights off allergies. Another way to take it is to put a drop of each in a little bit of water and drink it. I tried that when I felt allergies coming on and it honestly made the sneezing stop! I’m a believer! (:

20130920-104855.jpg
I use Breathe oil on my oldest son’s chest or his sinus area for cough and congestion. My sister had an interesting experience using this the other day. She has trouble with asthma and was going for her inhaler. She had put a drop of Breathe oil on her chest and no kidding, while we were talking on the phone, she said, “Oh my word! This is strange. All of a sudden I can take a clear breath!” No need for the inhaler!

I’ve also started trying the Slim and Sassy oil blend for metabolism. my friend who got me started on essential oils says she puts it on her arms and has seen it make a difference. We’ll see if I can tell any change.

I bought the Fractionated Coconut Oil to dilute some of the oils for topical application. I’ve been using store bought unrefined, virgin coconut oil but thought I’d try the kind sold by DoTerra to see if it makes a difference.

My mom and sister have gotten on board too and ordered their own Family Physician kits.

It’s a great kit to have with some basic oils and a few oil blends. It meets all the basic needs. Let me say that I am not an expert on essential oils. I am learning as I go and as I use them. I regularly use this website to find protocols for using the oils for various needs: Everything Essentials

I also ask my very knowledgeable friend who teaches classes on essential oils for advice. If you’re on Facebook, you can follow her page:

My next goal is to buy a diffuser to emit the oils into my house. Diffusing the On Guard oil will cleanse the air of germs (and with germs coming home from school, that sounds great to me)! You can also diffuse oils in the air to help with winter colds and coughs. Happy Oiling, my friends!

(One more note- my naturopath, chiropractor and son’s pediatrician ALL promote the use of essential oils in health and wellness! Go getcha some and see for yourself!) (:

On Guard

It’s back-to-school time again and that means germs, germs everywhere! I am excited to be using the DoTerra essential oil blend On Guard on my family!

20130826-194520.jpg
I dilute a drop of it in coconut oil and rub a little on the chest or feet of my kiddos, my hubby and me. It’s a protective blend for immune support. I love that it can be used topically on the skin, diffused in the air (which will be great for the fall and winter seasons) and also to clean surfaces with! DoTerra also makes On Guard hand soap! Plus, it is a yummy mixture of oils that smells like fall! How can you beat that?

I am all about wellness and taking preventative measures for health. I believe if I am doing my part by giving my family nutritious food, vitamins and supplements to support their immune systems and using my essential oils as needed, then I’ve done my best to protect them (and myself). If we get sick, we get sick and we can use essential oils to help treat some of those illnesses! Go check out DoTerra if you haven’t yet! You can go to my page: http://www.mydoterra.com/wellnessmom/
